The magnet! The irresistable view from the Accademia Bridge, painted by every artist who ever visited Venice!
For all those of us who love mud and boats, this is a paradise! In this painting I have tried to suggest that even in early spring a very faint glimmer of morning sunshine can hint at better days to come.
I did this sketch with my back to the possibly more immediately appealing view of the estuary as it winds its way inland towards the distant hills. It was an unseasonably warm April evening. Dusk was setting in but there was a glitter on the waves. The almost L-shaped composition and aerial perspective did the rest!
Between Dartmouth and Dittisham a narrow lane descends to a small bridge over the creek, revealing a scene of mud, boats and a tangle of branches. Perfect! And in the subsequent painting I tried to take advantage of the spring sunshine filtering through the bare branches.
This painting is a view from a high point south of Ste. Colombe-sur-Loing. The panoramic view of the enormous Burgundian countryside called for a ‘landscape’ frame, but the turbulant clouds above and the black curtains of rain fast approaching below persuaded me to go for an ‘upright’ picture. (Viewed from our car, but painted at home!)
